Since 2022, Egypt has raised its minimum wage at a pace few markets can match. The private-sector rate has jumped from EGP 2,400 a month to EGP 7,000 in 2026, and public-sector pay has climbed even further, reaching EGP 8,000 in 2026.
On paper, that’s a big jump.
But repeated devaluations have weakened the Egyptian pound, so higher salaries in EGP don’t always translate into greater purchasing power. Pay also varies widely across locations and roles. A software engineer in Cairo earns far more than a retail associate in Alexandria, and neither figure offers a clear picture of what it costs to hire the other.
So, what counts as competitive pay in Egypt?
This article breaks down the average salaries in Egypt by role and region, the current minimum wage, and what global employers must know to hire and pay compliantly when building a team in Egypt.
What is the average income in Egypt?
As per CAPMAS, Egypt’s official statistics agency, the average monthly wage in Egypt is EGP 6,336, up 26.6% from EGP 5,005 in 2023. But don’t take that figure as the going rate for everyone.
Public-sector employees in Egypt earn an average of EGP 14,660 a month, while private-sector employees earn EGP 5,796—a gap of more than 2.5 times.
That gap shows why the national average isn’t a reliable benchmark for employers. Averages can be pulled upward by a small number of high earners, so they don’t necessarily tell you what a candidate you’re looking to hire will expect. CAPMAS doesn’t publish a median wage dataset either, leaving employers without a true middle-of-the-market figure to use as a reference point.
It’s also important to watch how sources present pay: Some report gross monthly pay, while others list gross annual salaries. Mix the two, and your budget could be off by a factor of 12.
| Type of salary | Value in EGP | Value in USD |
|---|---|---|
| Average monthly wage (public + private) | 6,336 | 131 |
| Average monthly wage (private sector) | 5,796 | 120 |
| Average monthly wage (public sector) | 14,660 | 302 |
Note: These figures come from CAPMAS’s 2024 annual employment and wages bulletin. USD equivalents use an approximate 2024 average exchange rate of EGP 48.5 per USD.
Minimum wage in Egypt
Egypt has separate minimum wage rules for the private and public sectors, and both have risen quickly in recent years. The private-sector minimum wage currently stands at EGP 7,000 a month (~$136), while minimum monthly income in the public sector has reached EGP 8,000 (~$156).
USD figures use the Central Bank of Egypt’s average market rate of EGP 51.3 per USD on September 10, 2026. The dollar equivalents change as the exchange rate changes, so use the latest rate when calculating your actual hiring costs.
Salary by profession in Egypt
The pay gap between professions in Egypt is significant. A software engineer at the higher end of the market usually earns several times more than someone in a general labor role, and doctors and finance professionals also command considerably higher salaries than many lower-paid occupations.
Here’s what the salary ranges look like across a few common roles:
| Profession | Monthly range (EGP) | Monthly range (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Software engineer | 15,000 to 80,000 | 293 to 1,560+ |
| Doctor | 15,000 to 40,000 | 293 to 780 |
| Mechanical engineer | 10,000 to 30,000 | 195 to 585 |
| Manufacturing / general labor | 8,000 to 16,000 | 156 to 312 |
| Financial analyst / accountant | 6,000 to 21,000 | 117 to 409 |
Note: These salary ranges reflect the middle 80% of respondents (10th–90th percentile) in Paylab’s Egypt salary survey. USD figures are calculated using the EGP 51.3 per USD rate noted above.
Salary comparison by region in Egypt
Where a candidate is based in Egypt makes a real difference to their salary expectations. Cairo has the highest average salaries, with Alexandria close behind. Coastal cities Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, along with Giza, fall lower on the scale. For global employers, these regional pay differences can shift hiring budgets more than you expect.
Here’s how average monthly salaries compare across these regions:
| Region | Average monthly salary (EGP) | Average monthly salary (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo | 9,780 | 189 |
| Alexandria | 8,890 | 172 |
| Sharm El Sheikh | 8,390 | 162 |
| Hurghada | 7,250 | 140 |
| Giza | 7,210 | 139 |
Payroll compliance in Egypt
Running payroll in Egypt comes with several obligations beyond paying salaries. To stay compliant, employers must get everything right—from payment timing and social security contributions to income tax withholding.
The main requirements are:
- Pay frequency. Employees are typically paid monthly, with salary due no later than the 5th of the following month.
- Social security contributions. Employers contribute 18.75% of the employee’s insurable salary, subject to an annual cap of EGP 16,700 in 2026, to Egypt’s social security system.
- Income tax withholding. Employers must calculate, withhold, and remit employee income tax to the Egyptian tax authorities each month.
- Health insurance contributions. Employers contribute 3.25% of the insurable wage, uncapped, with employees contributing an additional 1%.
- Profit sharing. Employers must distribute at least 10% of annual net profits to employees, capped at one year’s salary per employee.
- Martyrs and Victims Fund. Employers deduct 0.05% of gross salary monthly and remit it to this fund.
- Mandatory annual raise. Private-sector employers must give employees an annual raise of at least 3% of their social insurance wage, with a minimum increase of EGP 250 a month.
- Training Fund. Employers with 30 or more workers must contribute 0.25% of the insurable wage toward employee training.
How Pebl simplifies payroll and compliance in Egypt
Salary benchmarks help you plan budgets, but payroll is where compliance happens. Once you hire in Egypt, you still need to run payroll accurately every month.
That gets complicated quickly when you’re managing payroll across countries. Contribution rates, tax brackets, and payment deadlines vary by country, and even a small mistake can create compliance problems and make it harder to track what each hire really costs. You need a payroll process that handles the local requirements without adding more work to your expansion plans.
Pebl brings salary benchmarking and payroll together. Market salary data helps you set competitive compensation, and Global Payroll handles monthly processing, including local-currency salary payments, social security contributions, and income tax withholding.
