UK Gen Z Wants Global Careers Without Moving Abroad

Young UK talent wants international experience without a permanent move, presenting an opportunity for UK employers offering flexible work, finds new Pebl research.

  • 88% are highly interested in working for an employer that allows temporary work from another country
  • 68% would prefer to remain UK-based while gaining international experience through short-term assignments or globally distributed teams
  • 88% believe working across countries and cultures would make them better leaders
  • 61% cite relocation costs and 53% visa or work authorisation requirements as barriers to international careers
  • 40% say a lack of support or opportunities from employers is holding young professionals back

LONDON, September 17, 2026 — The traditional path to an international career used to require an international move. UK Gen Z is challenging that model.

According to new research from Pebl, the global employment platform, young UK professionals want the experience and career advantages that come from working internationally without uprooting their lives.

In a survey of over 500 UK Gen Z professionals, 88% expressed strong interest in working for an employer that permits temporary work from abroad, outstripping their U.S. peers (64%). However, given equal career progression, 68% prefer remaining UK-based while gaining global experience via short assignments or cross-border teams (compared to 41% in the U.S.). Just 19.4% want to permanently relocate.

While U.S. Gen Z shows a stronger overall global identity (82% vs. 62.7%) and is more willing to detach opportunity from geography (54%), UK Gen Z remains domestically anchored. Over 62% believe their best career prospects are in the UK, and 68.1% prefer a UK-headquartered employer over an overseas firm (15.4%).

“The traditional expat model is out of step with how the next generation wants to work,” said Francoise Brougher, CEO of Pebl. “Companies no longer need an office in every market to offer meaningful global careers. Today’s employment infrastructure can connect people to teams, cultures and opportunities across borders without requiring a permanent move. Employers that embrace that shift will have a powerful advantage in attracting and developing talent.”

Global Leaders Aren’t Built In A Bubble

Young professionals view international work as vital skill development rather than a travel perk. A striking 88% of UK Gen Z agree that working across cultures makes them better leaders- higher than their U.S. counterparts (71%). Additionally, 83% believe professionals with cross-cultural exposure hold a competitive edge.

“Companies often think of international experience as something reserved for senior leaders,” added Brougher. “This research shows young professionals see it as a path to becoming a leader in the first place.”

Global Ambition. Local Roadblocks.

Both markets suffer an expectation-versus-infrastructure gap. U.S. Gen Z gives Corporate America low marks (only 19% give an 'A'), while UK employers average a mediocre 3.15 out of 5 for global career readiness.

Major barriers for UK talent include relocation costs (61%), visa hurdles (53%), and a lack of employer support (40%). Domestic employers do not need foreign offices to bridge this gap; they can foster global capabilities by facilitating temporary work-from-abroad periods via Employer of Record (EOR) partners, funding cross-cultural leadership programs, or building cross-border project exchanges.

Human Skills Will Reign Supreme

As AI reshapes the workplace, both U.S. and UK Gen Z believe cross-cultural human capabilities will increase in value. Communication and leadership topped the skills ranking, while AI skills ranked last. Crucially, 76% agree that as AI advances, navigating different perspectives and cultures will become an even greater competitive differentiator.

Methodology
The results are based on an online survey of 501 U.K. Gen Z professionals conducted between August 14 and August 18, 2026. Responses were not weighted.
