If you’re here, you’re thinking about hiring in Malaysia. And why not? You get access to multilingual talent, a strong services sector, and a fast-growing digital economy. Kuala Lumpur has become a hub for tech, finance, and regional operations teams across Asia.

To tap into those opportunities, you need to be able to make the right offer. And to make the right offer, you need to know where to start.

So what is the average salary in Malaysia?

The answer? More complex than it seems. Let’s walk through the data, what it means, and how to turn it into a smart, competitive offer.

Mean vs. median

The mean monthly salary in Malaysia is just over RM3,500 (US$750), while the median monthly salary is closer to RM2,700 (US$580).

Pay attention to that gap.

Here’s the difference:

  • Mean: The mathematical average. This can be increased significantly by outliers at the top of the pay scale.
  • Median: The middle value. Half of the employees make less, half make more. More representative when you want to understand what a typical employee earns.

Who is included in the data?

The Department of Statistics Malaysia focuses primarily on formal sector employees. That generally includes registered employees in recognized businesses, citizens and non-citizens, and largely private sector roles.

Self-employed individuals and informal workers are usually not included.

If you are hiring a senior executive, a niche AI engineer, or a regional director, national averages will not reflect those market realities. This further reinforces why role-specific benchmarking is essential.

Salary vs. total take-home pay

Two candidates can both earn RM8,000 per month and still evaluate their offers very differently.

Base salary is only one part of the package. In Malaysia, compensation may include fixed allowances, variable pay such as bonuses, and overtime payments in operational roles.

Employees also contribute to the Employees Provident Fund and the Social Security Organization, SOCSO. As the employer, you make statutory contributions on top of base pay.

When benchmarking, compare base to base and total package to total package.

How pay shifts by sector

Professional services, finance, and technology roles tend to command higher wages than agriculture or certain construction roles. For example, typical average monthly salaries in Malaysia in 2026 are roughly RM 5,000–8,000 (US$1,070–1,720) in professional services and finance, and RM 6,000–10,000 (US$1,285–2,140) in technology fields such as software development and cybersecurity. In contrast, agriculture or basic construction roles often fall closer to RM 2,000–3,000 per month (US$430–650), while manufacturing generally sits in between at around RM 3,000–5,000 per month (US$650–1,070), with wide variation depending on specialization and technical skill level.

Malaysia’s 2026 labour market outlook highlights continued demand for digital and engineering talent. If you are hiring in software development or cybersecurity, these sector‑specific data points should drive your offer rather than a broad headline number.

Skills matter

Don’t forget to factor in skills when benchmarking.

  • Low-skilled roles often sit closer to statutory minimum wage levels.
  • Semi-skilled roles, such as technicians and supervisors, show moderate variation
  • Skilled and professional roles, including engineers, analysts, and finance managers, often earn well above the national mean.

A senior software engineer in Kuala Lumpur will benchmark against the tech market, not the national median.

Salary differences by state and city

Where someone works makes a noticeable difference in pay. In the Klang Valley region, which includes Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, average monthly salaries tend to be higher. Kuala Lumpur’s average monthly pay sits around RM 6,700 (US$1,660), reflecting the concentration of corporate headquarters, finance, and tech jobs. States with strong industrial bases like Penang and Johor typically see averages around RM 5,900–RM 5,700 (US$1,460–US$1,410), while more rural and less industrialised regions generally report lower average wages in the RM 4,800–RM 5,400 range (US$1,190–US$1,340). This regional variation shows why you shouldn’t forget location when it comes to setting ranges.

Tips and resources for a successful hiring process

Follow these tips for the best chance of success:

  • Define the role clearly, including responsibilities, required skills, and seniority level.
  • Cross-check your salary range against multiple sources, including government data, industry surveys, and job postings.
  • Ensure contracts and payroll comply with Malaysian law, including minimum wage, SOCSO and EPF contributions, and employment protections.
  • Use reliable sources such as the Labour Department or professional HR consultancies to stay compliant and build trust with employees.

Hiring in Malaysia usually requires opening a local entity which is why many businesses prefer to work with an Employer of Record (EOR) if they do not already have one.

Utilizing support from EOR providers

An employer of record is a third party that legally employs your team member in Malaysia on your behalf. This allows you to hire without establishing a local entity, avoiding the hidden costs of entity establishment

The EOR handles salary offers, employment contracts, payroll, tax withholding, statutory benefits, and all ongoing compliance. You manage the day-to-day work normally while the EOR takes care of just about everything else.

For employers testing the market, or those who need to scale fast, an EOR is usually the right choice. You get to reduce risk, move faster, and know all local laws and regulations will be followed.
