The difference comes down to cost of living and competition. Rent is higher, transportation costs more, and there’s stronger demand for specialized talent in Harare. Bulawayo is a close second, especially with its manufacturing base. The further you go from urban centers, the leaner salaries tend to get.

Public vs. private sector

Between the government and the private sector, the private side usually wins out on pay.

A teacher in a public school might earn around US$150. That same role in a private school or international system can land closer to double. In industries like mining, fintech, or telecom, salaries stretch even further, especially when they are paid in U.S. dollars.

Education pays, but it’s more than just a diploma

Degrees open doors, but certifications and real skills give you leverage. A nurse with a diploma might earn about US$120. Add a bachelor's degree and private sector experience, and that number could climb to US$700 per month.

Accountants with local diplomas do fine, but add a CA or ACCA certification and you can move into the US$1,000 range. Developers with global credentials often earn even more. In Zimbabwe, qualifications translate directly into negotiating power.

Current salary benchmarks

So how much do people actually make in Zimbabwe? It depends on which number you look at and who is collecting the data.

  • Average salary : Roughly US$250 to $300 
  • Median salary : Closer to about US$180 to $200, which is more realistic for typical earnings 
  • Minimum wage : Around US$40 to $45 for many general roles

  • South Africa : Average salaries are around US$1,200 per month, more than four times higher than in Zimbabwe 
  • Botswana : Many roles pay in the US$400 to $600 per month range, with lower inflation and stronger purchasing power 
  • Zambia : Similar roles often pay US$250 to $350 per month, slightly ahead but still close to Zimbabwe

As an employer, this gives you room to stay competitive. Offering pay in U.S. dollars, even partially, can make your offers very attractive for top Zimbabwean talent.  For job seekers, these benchmarks provide useful context when negotiating for remote or cross-border roles.
